Speeds can reach 65 mph, but the sheer torque makes you feel like you have been rocket-launched after exiting every corner. II Briggs engines to keep on a tight budget. Many racers also run four-cycle LO206 or Jr. Full-size 125cc TaG (touch-and-go) karts are common, as are Rotax setups. 7-9 year olds ride in the Micro Swift group while 9-13 year olds ride Mini Swift setups.ġ2 year olds can then move up to the Junior class, where the competition gets truly fierce. Here, they ride 60cc two-stroke engines capable of reaching 50 mph. Once kids hit about seven years old, they can compete in the SKUSA “Cadet” class. At this age, no one keeps track of points, and there’s no championships, but parents and kids still clamor to do their best on the weekends and keep track of their own progress. Comer c50 and c51 engines are popular, but you may also see Honda GX35 or GXH50 four-cycle engines. At this age, children are riding what are unsurprisingly known as “Kid Karts.” These babies usually pack a 50cc, two-stroke engine that’s not too different from what you’d find on a weed wacker. Kart racing can start as young as five years old. And who knows? Maybe some day, that former child looks up from their car, sees thousands of racing fans screaming down at them and quietly thanks their mom or dad for waking up early and helping them race. They know their child is developing skills that could lead them down a long road towards professional skill-building. That is why so many parents wake up at 4 in the morning, helping their 12 year old load up a kart in the back of a pickup and starting the procession towards a long day of karting. Apex turning, brake thresholds, spotting passing opportunities - skills like these can be honed from behind the wheel of a simple platform that gets rid of everything you don’t need and replaces it with pure bliss. In other words, once you “get” kart racing, you can “get” racing other vehicles in an intensely meaningful way. Everything is distilled into its most essential parts, putting you literally as close to the engine and the asphalt as is humanly possible. It is, in many ways, one of the purest forms of racing. As Road & Track puts it: “Every Formula 1 driver had to start somewhere, and racing karts at a very young age is how most champions are cultivated.”īut even then, something about kart racing charms the most grizzled pro racecar drivers. Why? Well, for one, going back to karts marks a return to form for most of these guys. And the grade d is also in this age range but made for more basic go kart international races, like with models of less than 15 horsepower. Some motorsport fans may not take karting seriously, but catch racing pros from F1 and other series like NASCAR on the weekend, and they are most likely behind the wheel of a kart. Now, one notch down, the grade c is for those kids 12 – 14. all you need to do is be 15, once more, and meet all prior annual requirements. And to get a grade b, which I know you are going to ask next, he he he he heh…. You get the a by having the b prior and meeting every requirement, remaining faithful and proving yourself responsible with the b. You must be at least ( get this ) 15 years old to get one. The highest grade of license is the a, which lets you drive just about any kind of go kart for your career. In fact, what you will need, in this very particular ( and yes, certainly more rare, though I do wish there were more professional go kart racers out there in the world these days ) instance, is an international karting license ( which comes in grades a through d ). ooh yeah, he he he heh heh ), then you will need more than just a basic driver’s license. If you’d like to race professionally ( FIA – style, baby…. There ARE ALSO a few ones that DO require a license to drive, and these typically can go at full – car speed ( yup, some even hit around 90 miles per hour, if you really revv it up ). Now keep in mind that some go karts you can only drive based on your age, and for these, you must be at least 16. Such has usually been the case and still remains so to this very day, thankfully ( varying per state and / or county law where you reside ). The short answer is no - you do NOT need a driver’s license, usually, when you want to go kart. This time, it’s time to regather to talk about go karting and the driver’s license - with that, I’ll start with my short answering before even starting to give you the long one, he he he he heh. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on here, so I hope everyone’s been doing well and staying away from all the negativity in the world these days ( and boy oh boy, it sure does seem like there’s a lot out there these days ).
